Phoenix + Passion Pit Live in Central Park

Posted by anthoNYC on October 1, 2009

We’ve seen Passion Pit countless times over the past year and have seen a steady increase in their stage presence. One sign of this is lead singer Michael  Angelakos decision to leave the keyboards behind and take the “lead singer” role by the reigns, a move that we often debate here at TLC.

We saw Passion Pit last at Lollapalooza in August so the outdoor venue dynamic was one we were familiar with prior to their supporting spot for Phoenix’s 2-night stint in Central Park’s Rumsey Playfield. The set surprisingly and luckily closed out with Smile Upon Me, a song left out of recent set lists.

Saturday night, the second of 2 NYC gigs marked my first time seeing Phoenix live. It was a brisk September night when the band made their entrance onto the dark stage with the only light illuminating from the light-lined amps and drums. Things went from dark to glaring at the fist note from the set, greeted with immense back lights and an uproar of a applause.

The energy level stayed on par from beginning to end, saving the best for last of course. The set closed with an encore of 1901, an unexpectedly beautiful cover of Air’s Playground Love. Spotted at the show: Mischa Barton looking tragic.
