30 Years Later: Joy Divison’s Unknown Pleasures

Posted by anthoNYC on June 19, 2009

This past Monday June 15th marked 30 years since the release of Joy Divison’s masterpiece debut album Unknown Pleasures. You’ve seen that iconic cover duplicated a million times since, artwork that was taken from Cambridge Encyclopedia of Astronomy and representing the first radio pulsar ever discovered in 1976, PSR B1919+21.

Originally performing under the name Warsaw, Joy Division released their debut album to mild reception on June 15th 1979 but quickly made a mark on music history before lead singer Ian Curtis’ untimely death.

Unknown Pleasures is one of he most influential and must have albums ever made, if anyone can find me AN ORIGINAL VINYL and send it over to me I would be eternally grateful ;)

Enjoy my favorite tracks from the classic record below! If you want to learn more about the band pick up the Heart and Soul box set, 24 Hour Party People and Anton Corbijn’s 2007 Curtis biopic Control, all absolute musts.
