Ida Maria: Queen of The Bell House

Ida Maria at The Bell House, 6.14.09
As I write this very post I am dancing in my seat to Oh My God. Ida Maria is a rare artist who seamlessly blends pop-anthemic tunes, thrashy instrumentation, and vocals that range from sweet restraint to screaming! Somehow it all works into one highly enjoyable package. Jess and I have been singing her tunes on the streets of NYC for quite sometime now and anytime she’s in town you can guarantee we’ll be there dancing and singing along!
We caught her first US show ever a few months ago at Mercury Lounge and again when she opened for Glasvegas at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. Sunday night however, I witnessed a much more polished Ida Maria command the stage with her trademark whirlwind of unpredictable and unrestrained stage presence!

Ida opened up her 9-song set with Morning Light and took us on a journey through just about every emotion imaginable: insecurity, empowerment, vulnerability, rebellion, heartbreak and recklessness. We LOVED every minute of it!
The absolute highlight of the gig for me was her heart-wrenching rendition of Forgive Me (and my debatable favorite song from Fortress Round My Heart.) Ida gives so much onstage without abandon all while poking fun at how f***ed up life can be. Ida left almost as quick as she came, leaving a trail of mic stands, water bottles and cigarette stubs in her path. We’re looking forward to hurricane Ida again at Lollapalooza later this summer.

Ida is so quirky! her performance I found on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvlvZfcBfCc cracks me up. She really doesn’t hold back her personality for people, she is what she is.
