We took our first trip over to Brooklyn’s newest venue, Bruar Falls, last week to catch British indie-folk impresario, Jack Peñate. Back in 2007/2008, I immediately fell in love with Jack’s hit track, Have I Been a Fool? the first time I heard it on Zane Lowe’s Radio 1 show. His debut album, Matinee, was no disappointment — filled with thoughtful lyrics and romantic musings set to catchy acoustic melodies. The last time I saw Jack perform was when he was the surprise performer at XFM’s Winter Wonderland at Brixton Academy London and have been looking forward to catching him at an intimate venue ever since.

Like any truly talented and dedicated artist, Jack has taken his sound and style to new heights on forthcoming sophomore effort, Everything Is New. The new material sees Jack expanding on his already winning formula with layered techno beats, exotic rhythms, brass backings and soaring vocals. The South Londoner commanded the small stage with his band and tore through a passionate and energetic set of all new songs. Highlights included Let’s All Die, Be the One and latest single, Tonight’s Today.

Bruar Falls is a lovely new little addition to Williamsburg’s live music scene. It’s got a good sound system, colorful but demure decor and fashionable clientele. I actually almost felt like I could’ve been somewhere in North London and that’s rare for Brooklyn.

Everything Is New is out on XL June 22(UK)/23(US). If you’re in London, don’t miss his appearance at this year’s Wireless Festival on July 4th.
