The Ting Tings at Terminal 5, 3.16.09
We first caught The Ting Tings in 2008 at Southpaw in our early days during their first US tour, and again over the summer opening up for MGMT. We have been unable to catch any of their gigs this year but luckily our friend Georgia did! Check out her review and gorgeous pictures of the show last week at Terminal 5 below!

When I first saw the Ting Tings, they were opening up for MGMT at McCarren Park Pool (RIP) last summer. Their set was very short and left me wanting more. Luckily, I got the chance to see this incredible duo from Manchester perform once again last Monday, and needless to say it was definitely sweeter the second time around.

The crowd was quite confused with what to make of the opener, Hottub, an all-girl trio from Oakland, California. The girls emerged at 8:30PM clad in crazy patterned leggings, face paint, and an sparkly 80’s prom dress. Hottub’s rhymes, clumsy crowd surfing attempts, and animated personas were able to get the crowd moving especially with a song entitled, M.A.N.B.I.T.C.H. For an opening act Hottub left a fairly good impression on me, one that was memorable and eye-catching. (However, I was displeased that Coco Machete stepped on my Yves Saint Laurent jacket!)
Ting Tings drummer Jules De Martino made his way to the keyboard after 9:30 and played the first notes of We Walk, followed by lead singer Katie White who dazzled the crowd screaming “Nothing makes me feel good!” Great DJ followed, which only skyrocketed the excitement and energy level in Terminal 5. But it wasn’t until Traffic Light and Be The One that White showed her sweet and vulnerable side.
During the duo’s breakout hit, Shut Up and Let Me Go, White and De Martino froze for a moment before the drum solo to tell the crowd “We can’t fucking hear you!” The encore consisted of Impacilla Caprisung, which then segued into their current single That’s Not My Name. With a stage beautifully illuminated with an Andy Warhol-esque backdrop, a brass band that of women in different colored bob wigs, and of course The Ting Tings charming and high energy stage performance, it was impossible not to have a great time regardless of the gloomy Monday weather. In the words of White to sum up this show, “It was a fantastic Monday.”
