TLC’s very own Becky was the special guest today on Steve Lamacq’s BBC 6 Music show today talking about her wonderful self and musical interests/influences and what songs are the soundtrack to her good days and bad days. Since she was having a good day, she played Saturate by The Chemical Brothers. Steve Lamacq is a precious man and amazing dj…he and Becky had a lovely chat!

Why does every other city have a good Club NME except NYC?
Posted by Tastes Like Caramel on May 25, 2008
Ok, I know a lot of discerning UK clubbers would not consider Club NME nights the best, but everyone must admit it’s defnitely a fail-proof place to hear all the indie hits du jour and catch a buzzworthy live act. Back in 2006 in London, I caught We Are Scientists play a 2am surprise slot at Club NME Koko and more recently, in 2008, the night has been host to the likes of The Courteeners and The Rascals when their industry buzz was merely a faint hum.
I was excited in 2007 when I heard Club NME was opening up shop in NYC. The first night was supposed to be part of the CMJ festival if I remember correctly but all the details like location and who was going to play/spin seemed to be shrouded in secrecy. Nothing’s ever been very clear about it ever since then and when it does show up, it’s at The Annex (a relatively good venue/bar but if anyone’s been to Koko, the size of the “dancefloor” in this place is actually laughable) and no one’s heard of any of the bands playing.
I know the weekly Club NME LA at Spaceland has been a success since 2006 with celebrity DJs and big name bands galore, AND NOW I see they’ve started a Club NME San Francisco! This night is hosted at the respectable Popscene venue and featured Foals on its first outing!
NYC is in dire need of a mega blowout weekly indie night and I originally thought Club NME was going to be the answer…but nearly 2 years on, nothing’s really happening. WHAT’S GOING ON HERE?!

Listen to new Beck track online
Posted by Tastes Like Caramel on May 25, 2008
Beck previewed a new track from his imminent, Danger Mouse produced, album this week on his Myspace page. The track is called Chemtrails and if it’s any indication of the new album as a whole, it’s going to be very ethereal, fuzzy and layered. That said, it definitely sounds like an improvement from The Information which I found to be a bit of a disappointment, especially considering Guero was so effing cool.
Listen to Chemtrails now:

Celebrate America’s Birthday with Sonic Youth
Posted by Tastes Like Caramel on May 22, 2008
This 4th of July, the River to River Festival in NYC is presenting Sonic Youth in Battery Park. Sonic Youth are possibly the biggest act yet for this annual celebration which started out pretty small a number of years ago with Ryan Adams and most recently Belle & Sebastian (2006) and New Pornographers (2007). If the weather holds out, it’s guaranteed to be a fun day and nice prelude to the fireworks.
The event is FREE but tickets are required. Register for your tickets here on June 12. Limit 2 per person and tickets will have to be picked up at a location and date TBA before July 4.
If you’re forfeiting the en masse exodus to BBQ someplace woodsy this 4th, don’t miss this free show!

Last Shadow Puppets cover ’60s era Bowie
Posted by Tastes Like Caramel on May 20, 2008

I had feared for a while there that this was going to turn into a Last Shadow Puppets blog as my zealous, repeat listens of The Age of the Understatement were getting a bit out of hand. I can’t remember the last time I memorized all the words to an entire album in one day. Even though my initial flush of infatuation with Turner & Kane has ebbed this week, I just had to feature their gem of a b-side cover track.
As a b-side to first single, The Age of the Understatement, the duo recorded In the Heat of the Morning, a classic early early early Bowie pop song. Clearly a nod to one of their album’s strongest influences. I am so glad someone is bringing attention to and being influenced by these songs, which can be found on The Deram Anthology.
The boys recorded a soulful version faithful to the original. It’s about time young musicians are taking another listen to mod era Bowie and gleaning some very strong pop sensibilities from the tunes. By breathing new life into In the Heat of the Morning, The Last Shadow Puppets will no doubt introduce this Bowie period to a new group of listeners.
Perfect pop song. Perfect cover. Perfect summer tune. Have a listen:
