CMJ: Hype Machine + Babelgum Showcase Sleigh Bells, Theophilus London, VEGA, Midnight Juggernauts

Posted by anthoNYC on November 5, 2009

Theophilus London at Santos, 10.23.09

Wednesday October 23rd belonged to Hype Machine/ Babelgum with their fantastic daytime showcase at Santos Party House with FREE Heineken and glow stick accessories. The line-up consisted of one of our favorite new bands Sleigh Bells, VEGA, Theophilus London and a closing set by Midnight Juggernauts and soundtracked by DJ Alan Wilkis. Spotted at the showcase: M.I.A., Spike Jonze and Paul Dano.

Sleigh Bells were first up on the bill, setting the bar for their predecessors. Sleigh Bells’ Derek Miller and Alexis Krauss are still finalizing their demos and polishing their set, but with their current minimalist iPod, bass and vocal stage dynamic are making some major noise throughout the blogosphere!

Sleigh Bells at Santos, 10.23.09

We saw Sleigh Bells in their true element a few days after their Santos gig at The Market Hotel in Bushwick, the duo really let loose in an awesome punk rock way. We interviewed the band for our exclusive CMJ wrap from Derek’s home/current studio last week, so be sure to check back soon for that insightful feature!

Theophilus London was another artist I’d never seen live or fully familiarized myself with before, but after seeing his animated live set complete with killer dance moves you can count me as one of his fans! We saw Theophilus L. onstage with Sam Sparro and Mark Ronson a few days later at the Fader CMJ party at the ACE Hotel as the super-group Chauffeur. It was the collective band’s debut performance and we’re anxious to see what’s next in store for their project!

Simian Mobile Disco at Webster Hall!

Posted by anthoNYC on November 4, 2009

Simian Mobille at Webster Hall, 10.30.09

Last Friday (pre-Halloween) we danced our asses off in costume at Webster Hall for Simian Mobile Disco’s epic live set. We saw SMD at Highline in April and again at Lollapalooza in August and every time it was as if James Ford and Jas Shaw were playing exclusively for my dance circle. Another flawless set at Webster, come back soon?

More pictures from the live set can be seen HERE.

CMJ: Fader Showcases MNDR, VEGA, The Temper Trap, Midnight Juggernauts. Debuts Chauffeur, Florence and Jenny Wilson!

Posted by anthoNYC on November 4, 2009

The main draw for me at Fader Fort at the ACE Hotel in NYC was Florence + The Machine’s 7:15 set but along the way, open bar and wonderful sets by MNDR, Jenny Wilson, The Temper Trap, Chauffeur were an awesome bonus! Full pictures from each set can be seen HERE.

<< MNDR >>

has been building steam over the past couple months through her blog, MySpace, and her frequent party gigs.

Bushwick’s MNDR was a breath of fresh air in the sweaty basement of the ACE Hotel, jumping from keyboards, knob-turning, and moving the crowd with her incredibly fun and tech-no-logic set.

Keep an eye out for MNDR!

MP3: MNDR – C.L.U.B. or zShare

<< The Temper Trap >>

were essentially CMJ’s headliner, playing some of the biggest showcases of the week and gracing the cover of the CMJ industry newsletter. We saw The Temper Trap Wednesday night at The Music Hall of Williamsburg for the Blue Flowers showcase in the headlining slot once populated by Speech Debelle.

I’m going to be honest in saying that I was not impressed by their set that night, and was quite frankly bored. However, the band I saw onstage at MHOW was not at all the same one smashing the stage at the ACE Hotel.

I think The Temper Trap are more comfortable in a smaller and more intimate setting where they connect with the fans, stepping up their stage presence 150% and feeding off of the energy of the crowd. The crowning moment for me was when lead singer Dougy Mandagi poured bottles of water on the drums to create a geyser effect while Jonathan Aherne swung his bass around like a chainsaw. Now that’s what I call a show!

MP3: The Temper Trap – Science Of Fear (Herve Remix) or zShare

<< Jenny Wilson >>

was first on my radar as the guest vocalist on The Knife’s infectious You Take My Breath Away from the band’s 2005 album Deep Cuts.

Fellow Swedes Olof Dreijer and Karin Dreijer Andersson (aka The Knife) signed Jenny Wilson to Rabid Records where she released two records: Love and Youth (2005) and this year’s Hardships!

Like Chauffeur and Florence + The Machine, Wilson made her debut performance in New York at Fader Fort’s CMJ party. It was a beautiful debut performance and a great introduction to her electro-orchestra sound complete an ensemble of horns, flutes, keys and percussion.

MP3: Jenny Wilson – Like a Fading Rainbow or zShare

<< VEGA >>

is Alan Paloma’s third musical identity, the previous being Ghosthustler and the blog staple Neon Indian.

I first caught Vega live at Studio B last spring, and again at Hype Machine/Babelgum’s CMJ showcase before Fader’s party, and the set gets more and more polished each time.

MP3: VEGA – No Reasons or zShare

______________________________________________________________

<< Chauffeur >>

is the super-power collective of New York’s Thelophilus London, Australia’s Sam Sparro and the Transatlantic Mark Ronson.

I wasn’t quite sure what Chauffeur was upon seeing it listed on the bill, but I was pleasantly surprised to see these three artists from different places (musically and geographically) come together to make something fresh.

The trio played an extremely short set of about 3 songs, but wowed everyone with their cover of Sheila E.’s Glamorous Life. I’m interested to see what’s next!

MP3: Chauffeur – Soles of Fire or zShare

MP3: Sheila E. – The Glamorous Life or zShare

______________________________________________________________

<< Midnight Juggernauts >>

also played Hype Machine/Babelgum’s CMJ showcase with Vega. The Australian trio played a 6-song set that floated between punk and electronic, sucessfully rousing the sweat-soaked and spritied crowd into a hardcore dancefest.

We chatted with the band earlier that week (check back for the on-camera interview with ‘Sup Magazine) and they were excited to play CMJ, an energy that was pleasantly projected through their live set.

TLC vs. Jack Penate: Everything is New in NYC

Posted by anthoNYC on November 3, 2009

Jack Peñate Backstage at Mercury Lounge, 9.15.09

In September Jack Peñate and Miike Snow embarked on a joint US tour with 2 stops at New York’s famed Mercury Lounge. We were lucky enough to catch both shows and interview both artists during their stay (see: TLC vs. Miike Snow: Behind the Masks) No topics were off limits. Check out our interview with Jack Peñate where we discuss death, music scenes, and that horrible break up with New Young Pony Club’s Tahina Bulmer!

Check out our review of Jack’s gigs here: Tonight’s Today: Jack Penate Croons Mercury Lounge and Jack Penate Charms at Brooklyn’s Bruar Falls.

> Have you had any time to do anything in New York?
JP:
Not yet no. I feel like I’ve done my fair share of fun stuff as I’ve been here quite a lot in the past few years. I love it. I normally feel like I’m somewhere I shouldn’t be when traveling to other cities, whereas I don’t have that there. It feels quite normal.

> Is that because it’s a bit like London?
JP:
Yeah and I’ve got friends here, real friends. You just ring them and it’s completely comfortable. Whereas if you’re in Tokyo or wherever, you don’t feel that same kind of ease. I always have an amazing time here.

‘That style of music seemed the most natural to bring in at this point in my life.’

> I was listening to an interview you did with Jo Whiley after visiting New York and she asked you what the top 3 things to do in New York were and you mentioned Crif Dogs
JP:
Yeah I love that place.

> Anything else to add to that list? Like “Jack’s Guide to New York.”
JP:
Oh God I’m the worst person to ask. It’s always based around food. I really like that place Freemans Alley, they do amazing artichoke dip which I’m really into. I just really like the large drinks you get, you seem to pour out more spirit than we get back home. In England they sit there for hours making sure it’s exactly the amount, and it’s the most frustrating thing to watch! They almost wipe off the top if there’s too much. They’d rather you not have more, but in America I love the heavy handed drink pouring.

> That’s also dependant on your tipping..
JP:
(Laughs)
Yeah exactly it’s very true!

Jack Peñate at Bruar Falls, 6.3.09

> With your second album its a very drastic difference — I  know you’ve covered that in a million interviews — but what we’re interested finding out is why you chose this specific direction of afro-pop Caribbean beats, all this lush sound going around…
JP:
First of all, growing up all of  these styles of music were very familiar to me. I went to see Dr. John when I was 9 with my mum, my father was obsessed with Afro-beat, and my brother loved reggae so I grew up listening to Buju Banton, Sizzla, Red Rat and all these guys. I loved all of it but for some reason I didn’t feel like I could ever be obvious with loving that in my own music, and then something kind of clicked during the first record and I thought “If you love something surely you can bring it into your own music.” That style of music seemed the most natural to bring in at this point in my life.

There’s  lots of stuff I’d like to bring in later on but at this point I wanted that.  I didn’t want to come back with a serious second record. I wanted it to carry on that kind of joyous feeling from the first record but contextualize it in music that I loved and felt maybe hadn’t been explored in a lot of pop, and try to combine it with how I write songs. It felt kind of natural for some reason.

> You said you wanted to keep the second record joyous but when it comes to subject matter there is some serious lyrical content. We were talking to (even though your music is very different) a band like White Lies who say that their songs are about macabre themes but it’s still essentially pop music –
JP:
I do it in a sort of tongue in cheek way though…

> Where does your perspective on this come from?
JP: I suppose that mainly I still have this teenage way of thinking about life and how it’s going to end. It’s one of those things that kind of carries on and is constant in my head, I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing. A song like Let’s All Die actually came about from someone else’s influence. I went on a road trip across America when I was 19 with my bassist Joel, and we saw a funeral procession in New Orleans.

It took me back in quite a shock actually because death is a very different thing in Britain (and most of America) but to see a little pocket of where it was this incredible amazing celebration…I was almost jealous as I’d want that. Music and color, it’s a great way to send someone away and say goodbye instead of quietly sobbing in all black the rain in Bexley Heath, South London. It’s what I grew up with -  heartbreaking funerals that didn’t have that sense of joy which life does have. I also like the idea of 14 year old kids in England singing along to the words, I think it’s kind of funny and in some way sort of punk rock.

‘I still have this teenage way of thinking about life and how it’s going to end. It’s one of those things that kind of carries on and is constant in my head’

> Was that the reception you’ve gotten at festivals? We heard that your set at Reading was huge!
JP:
Oh my god it was insane. I wasn’t sure how these gigs would go because of the new record, but it was crazier than any gig we’ve ever done. There were like 15,000 people moshing, you know it’s going to be good when the crowd starts doing the thing where they sway and fall over and screaming. As soon I hit the note the thing went (crash sound.)

Jack Peñate at Mercury Lounge, 9.15.09

> How was it to go from those kind of shows to playing here at Mercury Lounge?
JP:
Yeah that was only 2 shows ago! It is definitely a learning curve, it makes you re-evaluate everything and realize there is so much work to do. I’m gonna have to be really strong and make sure I’ve got a huge backbone and just be like (we played last night it was a lovely show but it’s a pretty small crowd) ” Fuck it, this is how it is and you can’t expect much more.”  I think it’s a positive and it kind of knocks you in a way.

> It’s good so you don’t take anything for granted.
JP:
Yeah I don’t want to be knocked for too long though (all laugh.)

> Are you working on new material?
JP:
Yeah,  I’ve been in the studio any day off at the moment really. Went in the studio with The Streets the other day which was cool, we didn’t finish it though because we only had 6 hours because of our schedules.  I’ve been writing on tour and just looking forward to getting back to do more. I want new music out in the next few months, hopefully an EP soon for people to hear.

> Back to the live show, what was the craziest experience you’ve had? I read a bit about how fans went mad during Torn on the Platform
JP:
We played in a place called Hull in Northern England, they call it “hell hole.” I love it but it’s real, really fucking intense.  We played this place which is a pretty famous bar, if you saw this place…I mean this room (boiler room of Mercury Lounge) is beautiful in comparison and it’s not that much bigger. The people who have played there Radiohead, Coldplay, u2, it’s one of those institution places. They oversold it by about 200 kids, so there were 500 kids in space for 300 IF that. The sound man is severely disabled, it was all sort of a head fuck AND in the middle of a whole estate, the whole vibe is fucking mad.

All the kids got onstage for pretty much the whole gig. I just bought a new guitar and I remember looking over and saying “Where the fuck is my guitar!?” My tour manager had to chase after this kid, they stole everything. Kids were trying to undo the drums but it was all ’cause of love, very much like mementos. I can’t really get annoyed about that, in fact it was kind of funny. My drummer was having to smack kids hands with the drum sticks while he was playing and kids were trying to take my guitar. It was fun, that was a good one.

‘I wanted it to carry on that kind of joyous feeling from the first record but contextualize it in music that I loved and felt maybe hadn’t been explored in a lot of pop, and try to combine it with how I write songs.’

> Over here they just go for the set list or a guitar pick! You’re based in London — is there music community you have? I know you and the Maccabees are friends.
JP:
Yeah definitely! I live in a home that’s kind of by the record label. I rent a room and below is a record label called Merock. There’s lots of bands around. It’s a good thing but I kind of want to break away, kind of like the idea of LA because it’s kind of ridiculous. I love New York but it would be too easy but it’s quite close to England. I like the idea that if I’m going to move,  it’ll be 12 hours from home.  There’s definitely a great musical community in London but sometimes it can also be a fucking nightmare. You don’t want to talk about “Did you hear the new (this) single…” and there’s a lot of that, which is what those scenes do. It gets a bit intense, I kind of want to opt out.

> You jokingly mentioned dating one of the girls from New Young Pony Club in a previous interview.
JP:
(Fumbles his words) My girlfriend’s here, no. Someone wrote a bit in a magazine and then everyone was saying it. I met her once.

> Not to put you on the spot but I read that she came up to you in a festival and said “You’re my boyfriend.”
JP:
Yeah she did, we definitely don’t know each other…

> Oh was it off of the tabloid thing?

JP: Yeah it was a joke, it’s odd to be dating someone you don’t know…

> So you guys are broken up I can assume? (All laugh)
JP:
Horribly painful, horribly painful. It’s like a Bon Iver kind of record, crying in my teacup.

Florence + The Machine Headlines Bowery Ballroom

Posted by anthoNYC on November 1, 2009

Florence + The Machine at Bowery Ballroom, 10.27.09

Florence + The Machine made their NYC debut at Fader’s CMJ party at the ACE Hotel on Saturday October 24, and we were front and center for the acoustic masterpiece! Last Monday we got a second dose of Florence at Bowery Ballroom, an enchanting set complete with a full band, bright lights and a gorgeous set design.

The show began at 9 PM when Tennessee’s Holly Miranda took the stage to play a melodic 45 minute set. Halfway through the set she was joined with members of Nada Surf before bowing out for the lady of the night, Ms. Florence Welch.

Nothing gets more intimate than being almost eye level with a performer during an acoustic set and serenading each other (yup it happened at Fader), but even during a bigger stage production Florence is a confiding storyteller confessing all of her secrets through her voice. The audience was entranced and anxious for Florence to hit the next note and bash her fire-red mane around while doing so.

I was so involved with the show that after the generous 12 songs, I turned to the person next to me and asked if it was REALLY encore time. Time really stands still when Florence is in the spotlight.

The set wrapped with You’ve Got The Love and Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up), the ultimate heartfelt combo that moved the entire venue to a unified and uplifted place. Yet another absolutely stellar and flawless performance.

CMJ: Delorean, Via Tania, Fall On Your Sword and Au Revoir Simone

Posted by anthoNYC on October 30, 2009

Delorean at Le Poisson Rouge, 10.23.09

As you know last week was a whirlwind of shows in NYC for CMJ! Some days we hit about 4 different showcases, as was the case on Friday.

My Friday CMJ-age started at Rockwood for Au Revoir Simone’s set for SPIN Magazine, Dolorean at Le Poisson Rouge for self-titled Magazine, followed by Via Tania and Fall On Your Sword at Norwood  for The Hours & High-Rise Showcase, topped off with Sleigh Bells at Market Hotel for the Anti-CMJ showcase by Quiet Color (to be discussed in a separate post.)

In this post I’ll discuss each act and share a few of my favorite shots of the day. More pictures can be seen HERE.

Au Revoir Simone at Rockwood >>

After seeing Au Revoir Simone for the first time at The Music Hall of Williamsburg a few months ago, I fell in love!

Their musical chemistry blends together seamlessly as they swap instruments, lead vocals and jokes that create a warm concert experience whether it be in a music hall or a tiny tiny space such as Rockwood.

The highlight of their short set came in the form of the “alternate version” of Sad Song from their latest album Still Night, Still Light.

_______________________________

<< Dolorean at Le Poisson Rouge

I’ve been familiar with Barcelona’s Dolorean for quite some time, their remixes of Lemonade, The Big Pink and The Teenagers having been some of my favorites over the past year. However, I’m embarrassed to admit that it wasn’t until seeing them live that I’d familiarized myself with the new material! The shame!

With this said, Dolorean was one of my surprise stand-out acts from CMJ 2009. It’s hard not to enjoy their punkish-electro sound and not thrive off of the energy projected from their live set.

The foursome are following up their Ayrton Senna EP (2009) with a full-length album slated for 2010. I eagerly await the release and the chance to catch their full set!

_______________________________

Fall On Your Sword at Norwood >>

Brooklyn’s Fall On Your Sword, whom I’d been unfamiliar with previous to their gig at Norwood, played a 30 minute set as a part of The Hours and High-Rise CMJ showcase.

FOYS’ backdrop provided a great visual guide, featuring footage of New York, a drunken David Hasselhoff and everything in between. I thought it was a great set from an unfamiliar band and definitely have them on my radar now.

The absolute greatest and most unexpected moments came when the band played some excellent covers including David Bowie and one of my absolute favorite New Order songs Ceremony. Major +++ points for that one!

_______________________________

<< Via Tania at Norwood

Chicago’s Via Tania was another new discovery during CMJ for me. VT’s voice and music are very dreary, almost like being stuck at the in-between state of consciousness.

Via Tania’s sophomore album Moon Sweet Moon was released a few weeks ago, don’t miss out on this truly unique musical experience.
